When you are planning to cut down trees or do other heavy-duty yard job, you may suddenly find the chainsaw won’t start. Do you know how to troubleshoot the reasons why your chainsaw won’t work? Here, we have listed a few different reasons to help you to identify the issue.

1. The spark plug might be defective and needs cleaning.
Spark plug ignite the whole ignition system with electrical current. If the spark plug is dirty or defective, then the electrical connection will be lost. Try cleaning it, and if it doesn’t work, replace it with a new Hipa spark plug. If the spark plug looks fine visually, but you haven’t changed it regularly, replace it anyway. It’s a good habit to replace it every other season.

2. The carburetor is clogged.
The carburetor mixes fuel and air to run the internal combustion engine. This can be clogged as the old fuel can be very sticky, which will prevent the mixing process from starting. To clean, you need to drain any fuel and clean out the carburetor with carburetor cleaner. If the carburetor is too clogged to be cleaned, it may need replacing.

3. The ignition coil not working.
The coil sends voltage to the spark plug. If you’ve confirmed that the spark plug works fine, then it’s time for you to test the ignition coil with a coil tester. If there is no spark when testing, it’s likely the coil is defective and needs to be replaced.

4. The issue may caused by a bad recoil starter.
If the recoil starter is defective and unable to engage with the chainsaw engine crankshaft again, the engine cannot start as you cannot turn on the chainsaw’s engine. Then a new recoil starter is needed to solve the problem.

5. A broken rewind spring.
The rewind spring is part of the recoil starter assembly in charge of rewinding the starter cord after each pull. If the cord doesn’t rewind after pulling, then the issue is likely due to a broken rewind spring.

6. Have you flooded the chainsaw’s engine with fuel?
One of the common reasons is fuel issue. Flooding your chainsaw is easy and common if you’re not very experienced. If so, we suggest draining some fuel out of the chainsaw, drying and replacing the spark plug, and letting it run idle for 15 minutes.

Though we listed these reason for you to troubleshoot, it still brings us inconveniences with a broken chainsaw. It’s a good idea to regularly maintain your chainsaw to keep it up and running smoothly. In the end, if you have checked all the possible reasons above, your chainsaw still won’t start, then you may need to bring it to a repair store.
